Discover the perfect sesame butter cookies with a hint of anise, straight from Aunt Anne's cherished Italian recipe. Irresistibly fragrant and delicious straight out of the oven!
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup butter
  • 0.75 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons anise extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.125 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup milk, or as needed
  • 1 cup sesame seeds
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) for a perfect bake.
  • In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar until smooth. Add egg and anise extract, blend well. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually mix into the butter mixture. If using a stand mixer, let the dough mix for 1 more minute to lighten it. The dough will be soft and easy to hand roll.
  • Take small pieces of dough slightly smaller than a walnut, shape them into small logs. Dip each log in milk before rolling them in sesame seeds. Arrange the cookies on a baking sheet with one-inch space between each. Expect minimal spreading during baking.
  • Place the cookies in the preheated oven and bake for 17 to 20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly toasted. Transfer the cookies from the baking sheets to wire racks to cool. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
