Vegetable and cream cheese baked wontons - a crowd favorite! Easy to make, no frying required. Perfect for prepping and freezing ahead of time.
Ingredients:
  • For the wontons:
  • 4 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger (from a 1-inch piece of ginger)
  • 5 cups thinly sliced Napa cabbage (green cabbage is also ok)
  • 1 large carrot, grated (about 1 1/3 cups grated)
  • 3/4 cup frozen peas, thawed
  • 2 scallions, thinly sliced
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 48 to 50 square wonton wrappers
  • 4 1/2 to 5 ounces cream cheese
  • For the dipping sauce (optional):
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 4 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 3/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
Instructions:
  • To make the filling, heat vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté garlic and ginger until fragrant, about 30-60 seconds. Add cabbage and cook until it starts to wilt, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in carrot, peas, scallions, salt, and sesame oil, and cook for another minute. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool on a plate for 10 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400ºF and position the rack in the center. Brush 2 large baking sheets with 1 tablespoon of oil each, spray with cooking spray, or line with parchment paper for extra crispiness.
  • Prepare the egg wash by gently whisking one egg until smooth, then set it aside.
  • Assemble the wontons: Place a tablespoon of vegetable filling in the center of 4 wonton wrappers. Add half a teaspoon of cream cheese on the filling. Brush the egg wash on the edges. Pinch together two opposite corners, then the other corners, forming a pyramid shape. Seal the edges well. Repeat with remaining wrappers. Place the assembled wontons on a sheet pan, cover with plastic wrap. Build a total of 24 to 25 wontons. Remove plastic wrap and lightly brush or spray with oil before baking.
  • Bake the first batch of wontons until the edges turn a deep golden-brown, about 11 to 12 minutes.
  • Prepare the second batch while the first one bakes, then bake the second batch after the first one is done.
  • Enjoy: Allow the wontons to cool for a few minutes. Combine soy sauce, vinegar, and sesame oil in a bowl. Serve it with the warm wontons. For the best taste, enjoy these baked wontons on the same day.
