Our homemade tomato sauce will make you swear off store-bought sauce forever.
Ingredients:
  • 36.40 gm olive oil
  • 1 medium brown onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 400g cans peeled whole tomatoes
  • 44.40 gm tomato paste
  • 9.00 gm sugar, or to taste
  • Salt & ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
  • In a medium saucepan, sauté the olive oil, onion, and garlic over low heat for 12-15 minutes until soft and translucent. This gentle cooking process eliminates the sharpness of raw onions and adds a delightful sweetness that elevates the tomato sauce. Stir frequently for best results.
  • Add the tomatoes with their juices and crush them to your desired texture using a wooden spoon or a potato masher. Remember, the more you crush them, the smoother your sauce will be.
  • Combine the tomato paste and sugar, stirring until fully mixed. Tomato paste enhances the sauce's tomato flavor as it is a concentrated form of fresh tomatoes. The sugar helps counteract the tartness of the tomatoes.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 25-30 minutes until thickened, ensuring all the liquid evaporates. Keep the saucepan uncovered during cooking to intensify flavors and thicken the sauce properly. Adjust the size of the saucepan; a wider and shallow pan will speed up the process. The sauce is ready when it has a rich flavor and a thick consistency, not watery or bland.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed with salt, pepper, and a touch more sugar if desired to balance flavors. Enjoy the finished sauce as desired.
