Mouthwatering homemade Mediterranean bread filled with black olives, garlic, and Italian spices for a flavor-packed family favorite.
Ingredients:
  • 1.25 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 (6 ounce) can sliced black olives, drained
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon butter, divided
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, mix together water, sugar, and yeast, and allow it to sit until the yeast softens and a creamy foam forms, approximately 5 minutes. Next, add flour, black olives, olive oil, garlic, salt, and Italian seasoning to the bowl, and combine well to create a dough.
  • Place dough on a floured surface and knead until smooth for 5 to 10 minutes. Allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  • Gently deflate the dough and knead for an additional 5 to 10 minutes. Allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in volume once more, which should take about 45 minutes.
  • Place a well-floured cloth in a bowl. Shape the dough into a ball and place it upside down in the bowl. Allow it to rise until doubled in volume, approximately 45 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and place a baking dish filled with water on the bottom rack.
  • Prepare the baking sheet by greasing it with a touch of butter and sprinkling cornmeal on top before gently transferring the dough onto it.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until puffy, around 15 minutes. Then, lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake until bread turns golden brown, for 30 to 40 minutes. Brush the remaining 2 teaspoons of butter over the surface. Allow it to cool slightly for about 15 minutes before slicing.
