Indulge in Champurrado, a decadent Mexican hot chocolate drink with rich flavors of Mexican chocolate, pinole, and spices for a festive treat.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 whole clove
  • 1 pod star anise
  • 4.25 cups milk
  • 2 tablets Mexican chocolate (such as Chocolate Ibarra®)
  • 0.75 cup pinole (coarse ground maize flour)
  • 1 pinch crushed piloncillo (Mexican brown sugar cone), or more to taste
Instructions:
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine water, cinnamon stick, clove, and star anise; bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let the spices steep for 10 minutes until the water is fragrant; then strain.
  • In a separate saucepan over medium heat, warm milk, chocolate, and pinole together, whisking until chocolate is completely melted and the mixture thickens, which should take about 10 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in piloncillo, and let it sit until the sugar dissolves, around 5 minutes. Finally, pour cinnamon water into the chocolate mixture and mix well.
