Classic American goulash: Beef, macaroni, and seasoned tomato sauce in one pot. A nostalgic comfort dish.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 large bay leaves
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 1 quart chicken broth
  • 1 (24 ounce) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 0.25 cup chopped Italian parsley
  • 1 cup shredded white Cheddar cheese
Instructions:
  • Prepare all your flavorful ingredients.
  • In a pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add ground beef and onion; cook until beef is browned and crumbly and onion is translucent for about 5 minutes. Stir occasionally until liquid evaporates, around 3 to 5 minutes. Mix in garlic, bay leaves, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.
  • Cook, stirring occasionally, until flavors meld, around 3 minutes. Add broth, marinara sauce, and diced tomatoes. Swirl water in the sauce jar, then pour it in. Stir in soy sauce and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until flavors deepen, about 30 minutes.
  • Turn up the heat to medium-high for a vigorous simmer. Add macaroni, and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly tender, approximately 12 minutes. Test for doneness at the 10-minute mark.
  • Take the mixture off the heat and remove the bay leaves. Add Cheddar and parsley, then cover and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Taste the dish and adjust seasoning to your liking.
