Irresistibly soft and flavorful homemade flour tortillas, ideal for your next fiesta.
Ingredients:
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.25 cup vegetable shortening
  • 0.5 cup hot water
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour for dusting
Instructions:
  • Combine flour, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. Add vegetable shortening and use a pastry cutter to blend until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Create a crater in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the hot water. Use a fork to blend the flour and water until combined, then transfer the dough to a cutting board.
  • Work the dough until it is smooth and soft, which usually takes around 3 minutes. Incorporate additional flour if the dough is too sticky.
  • Sprinkle additional flour on the cutting board, then cover the dough with a bowl and allow it to rest for 15 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into eight equal portions and cover with a cloth until ready to use.
  • Shape dough into balls by hand or use a tortilla press to flatten them.
  • Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place a tortilla in the skillet and cook until it bubbles, about 1 minute. Flip and cook for another minute. Flip once more and cook for an additional minute. Repeat with the rest of the dough.
