Chef John's Hot Buttered Rum

Indulgent hot buttered rum by Chef John, a festive must-have for any celebration.
Ingredients:
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 0.5 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 6 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1.125 cups dark rum
  • 4.5 cups boiling water, or as needed
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Combine butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, and salt in a mixing bowl. Cream together with a spatula until fully combined.
  • For the drink, spoon about 2 tablespoons of the batter into a fun, heat-proof mug. Pour in 1 tablespoon of cream, 3 tablespoons of rum, and fill halfway with boiling water. Mix until the batter dissolves, then top up with more water. Sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg. Repeat for all 6 drinks and serve promptly.
