Classic fried pastry, also known as 'bowties'. Swap rum for brandy for a flavor twist.
Ingredients:
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 0.5 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons rum
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 3.3333299160004 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 0.5 cup confectioners' sugar
Instructions:
  • Combine eggs and sugar, then incorporate sour cream, vanilla, and rum or brandy. Mix in sifted flour and salt, then knead on floured surface until dough is smooth.
  • Take a small piece of dough and roll it out to be very thin, almost like paper. The dough may spring back a bit as you roll, similar to working with pie crust.
  • Cut the dough into 2-inch wide strips, then diagonally every 4 inches. Make a one inch slit in the center of each strip and pull one of the pointier corners through the slit. If working solo, roll and cut all the dough before frying in two batches. With two people, one person can cut a "stockpile" while the other fries.
  • Preheat the oil to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C. An electric skillet is perfect for solo cooking. Carefully drop 7-8 cookies into the hot oil; they should float to the surface immediately.
  • As soon as the cookies turn a light brown or very dark tan on the bottom, use a two-tined carving fork to flip them. Once the second side is browned, take them out of the oil using a slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels. Once the paper towel is filled with cookies, sprinkle confectioner's sugar over them and transfer everything, including the cookies, paper towels and all, to a cookie sheet.
