Custard Buttercream

Indulgent German buttercream perfect for cake or cupcakes. Rich and delicious frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1.3333333730698 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon rum
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • In a small, heavy saucepan, whisk together egg, sugar, and milk. Stir over medium-low heat until it almost boils. Whisk constantly until it thickens to a thin custard. Remove from heat and let cool for about 1 hour before using.
  • In a bowl, use an electric mixer to whip the butter until it becomes light and creamy, which should take around 5 minutes. Slowly add the cooled custard, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time, making sure to beat well after each addition. Mix in the rum and vanilla extract, and continue beating until the buttercream reaches a very light and fluffy consistency.
