Tender grandma's pot roast recipe, perfect for sharing with loved ones.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (3 pound) bottom round roast
  • 1 large yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 400°F (200°C).
  • Trim excess fat from the roast, leaving a quarter-inch layer. Season generously with salt, pepper, and garlic powder on all sides. Place the roast, fat-side up, in a Dutch oven and surround with onions.
  • Cover and bake the roast at 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) for 1 1/2 hours until aromatic. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), continue baking covered, while turning the meat every 30 minutes for another 3 hours until browned and cooked through. Ensure roast reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees F (65 degrees C) with an instant-read thermometer.
  • Test the roast's tenderness by gently piercing it with a fork. If it's not as tender as desired, extend the cooking time in 30-minute intervals until the meat effortlessly falls apart.
  • Take the roast out of the oven and transfer it to a cutting board. Cover it loosely with foil and allow it to rest for a minimum of 20 minutes.
  • Whisk flour and water together in a small bowl until combined.
  • Place the Dutch oven on the stovetop over medium heat. Smash the remaining onion and stir into the gravy, being careful not to burn it. Gradually add the water-flour mixture, whisking until the gravy reaches your desired thickness.
  • Serve the sliced roast with a side of delicious gravy.
