Decadent chocolate custard pie inspired by Grandma's Southern holiday recipe.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons self-rising flour
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, or more to taste
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (9 inch) pre-baked pie shell
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1 pinch white sugar, or to taste
  • 1 dash vanilla extract, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Combine the sugar, flour, and cocoa powder in a bowl until fully mixed.
  • In a separate large bowl, combine milk, egg yolks, and vanilla. Mix in the flour mixture until the custard is smooth.
  • 1. Pour custard into a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Stir constantly until it gently simmers, about 5 minutes. Continue cooking until thickened, for an additional 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat promptly, stir to remove any lumps, and pour into the pre-baked pie shell.
  • Position an oven rack 6 inches below the broiler and preheat the broiler.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together egg whites, sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form. Gently spread the meringue over the custard.
  • Place the dish under the preheated broiler until the peaks are lightly browned, taking care not to burn the meringue, for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Chill the custard pie in the fridge or on Grandma's porch on a cool night until the custard sets, approximately 2 hours.
