Grandma's classic orange cinnamon rolls with creamy frosting, a crowd favorite.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup warm water (105 - 115 degrees F; 40 - 45 degrees C)
  • 0.75 cup warm orange juice (105 - 115 degrees F; 40 - 45 degrees C)
  • 0.25 cup warm milk (105 - 115 degrees F; 40 - 45 degrees C)
  • 0.25 cup shortening
  • 0.25 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3.75 cups all-purpose flour, or as needed
  • 0.5 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 0.5 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
Instructions:
  • Combine yeast with warm water and orange juice in a bowl. Allow it to rest until the yeast softens and a creamy foam develops, approximately 5 minutes.
  • Combine warm milk, shortening, 1/4 cup white sugar, egg, and salt in a separate bowl, beating until smooth. Stir in yeast mixture. Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Prepare a generously greased large bowl and two 11x7x2-inch baking sheets.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl and swirl it around to ensure all sides are coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, approximately 1 hour.
  • Flatten the dough and split it in half. Roll out each portion on a lightly floured surface into two 15x10-inch rectangles.
  • Combine sugar, softened butter, and orange zest in a bowl until the filling is smooth. Divide the filling in half and spread evenly over each dough rectangle. Roll up each rectangle starting from the long end to create a log. Cut each log into 15 rolls.
  • Place the rolls on the baking sheets and cover them with plastic wrap. Allow the rolls to rise until doubled in size, approximately 45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and unwrap the baking sheets.
  • Bake the rolls in the oven until they are lightly browned, for about 20-25 minutes.
  • In a bowl, whip confectioners' sugar, cream cheese, softened butter, orange juice, and orange zest until the frosting is velvety. Slather the luscious frosting onto the warm rolls.
