Total Time:
Centuries-old family recipe from Grandma Delilah.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup colored sugar for decoration
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Combine brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, and shortening in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Gradually mix in buttermilk and dry ingredients, alternating between the two.
  • Shape dough into walnut-sized balls and coat with colored sugar, if desired. Place them 2 inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven for 10-13 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool.
