Classic buttermilk sugar cookies, ideal for holiday cutouts or thoughtful food gifts.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup shortening
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar, or more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon milk, or more as needed
Instructions:
  • Combine sugar, shortening, buttermilk, and egg in the bowl of a stand mixer and mix until creamy.
  • Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla extract, and salt in a bowl. Gradually add this mixture to the sugar mixture, beating well after each 1/2 cup addition. Refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the dough to your desired thickness using a floured rolling pin. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and place them on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until bottoms lightly brown, about 8 to 12 minutes. Cool cookies completely on wax paper or a wire rack, approximately 15 to 30 minutes.
  • In a bowl, blend confectioners' sugar and milk to create a smooth paste, adjusting consistency with more sugar or milk. Gently frost cooled cookies and decorate with a generous sprinkle of colorful sprinkles.
