Grandma's Italian Christmas cookies: Spicy walnut treats with zesty glaze, no mixer required.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 0.25 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.25 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 0.5 cup chopped walnuts
  • 0.25 cup finely chopped walnuts
  • 0.75 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons multi-colored sprinkles, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, pepper, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg, and cloves in a large bowl, sifting them together.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the shortening in 30-second intervals on high. Combine the melted shortening with the dry ingredients and mix well with a spoon.
  • Pour in milk, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla; stir gently to blend the flavors. Toss in raisins, chopped walnuts, and finely chopped walnuts; mix by hand until well combined. Shape dough into small balls and place them 1/2 inch apart on baking sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven in batches until the edges turn golden brown, for about 15 to 18 minutes. Let them cool on the baking sheet briefly, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely, for about 15 minutes.
  • While the cookies cool, whip up the glaze. Combine confectioners' sugar, milk, orange juice, and orange zest in a bowl and mix until smooth.
  • Drizzle glaze over cooled cookies or use a spoon to spread it. Sprinkle with colorful sprinkles for a fun touch.
