Create an authentic Irish soda bread with a simple round shape and classic cross-cut design using this grandma's recipe.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.25 cups buttermilk
  • 0.25 cup corn oil
  • 1 cup raisins
Instructions:
  • - Preheat the oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and prepare a baking sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper.
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, and corn oil. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Fold in raisins until dough forms, then transfer to a floured surface. Shape dough into a ball and place on a baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to cut a large cross on top before baking.
  • Bake the bread on the middle rack of the preheated oven until it turns a beautiful golden brown, which should take around 30 to 40 minutes.
