Grandma Sheets' Sugar Cookies

Total Time:
Grandma's Southern Ohio sugar-topped biscuits are a must-try. Light and not overly sweet, these fluffy treats are perfect for any occasion. Adjust flour based on humidity levels for the perfect batch every time.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions:
  • Combine the sugar, shortening, baking powder, and ground nutmeg. Beat in the eggs. In a separate bowl, mix the milk with baking soda and add it to the mixture. Gradually incorporate the flour until the dough is no longer sticky and can be rolled out to about 1/4 inch thickness, switching from a mixer to hand-mixing as needed.
  • Sprinkle flour on the counter and rolling pin. If it's humid, chilling the dough briefly can help. Refrigerate the unused portion of dough. Roll out the dough until it's 1/4 inch thick, cut out shapes with a cookie cutter, and place them on a cookie sheet.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C. Bake for 8 minutes until lightly golden around edges or on the bottom. Remove and cool on flattened grocery bags or wire racks.
