Satisfy your sweet tooth with Grandma's irresistible apple dumplings, a beloved dessert perfect for any season.
Ingredients:
  • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.75 cup shortening
  • 7 teaspoons ice cold water, or as needed
  • 6 medium apples, peeled and cored
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup light corn syrup
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions:
  • In a bowl, combine flour, salt, and cinnamon for the crust. Add shortening and mix until crumbly. Sprinkle water over the mixture until dough forms a ball. Shape the dough, wrap in waxed paper, and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out half of the dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut it into six 7-inch squares. Save any leftover dough for optional decorations.
  • Position a single apple in the center of every piece of dough.
  • In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Evenly distribute the mixture among the apple cores and dot each apple with 1 teaspoon of butter on top. Fold the corners of each pastry square over the apple, gently pressing to seal. Place the dumplings in a large baking dish, ensuring they do not touch.
  • Preheat the oven to a sizzling 500 degrees F (260 degrees C).
  • In a pan, bring water, sugar, corn syrup, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg to a boil for 3 minutes. Pour the syrup over all the dumplings.
  • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake until the crust takes on a light golden brown color, which should take about 5 to 7 minutes. Then, lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and continue baking, occasionally drizzling the hot syrup from the bottom of the pan over the dumplings, until the apples are tender, for about 30 to 35 more minutes.
  • Enjoy while it's deliciously warm.
