Iconic Upstate New York Meat Sauce, perfect for topping hot dogs. A nostalgic favorite from Grandma Slattery - savory, flavorful, and a must-try for hot dog lovers!
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 0.5 tablespoon prepared mustard
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter until sizzling. Cook the onion in the butter until tender. Add in vinegar, brown sugar, lemon juice, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix well.
  • Once the mixture starts simmering, gently add the raw ground beef, using a wooden spoon to break it into pieces. Let it simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. Serve over steamed hot dogs and optionally top with raw onions.
