Classic French Canadian Depression-era dessert. Still beloved today.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.33333334326744 cup cold butter
Instructions:
  • Combine brown sugar and water in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Lower heat, then mix in 1 tablespoon of butter and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Cover the mixture while you prepare the batter.
  • Combine flour, white sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add 1/3 cup of butter and use your fingers or a fork to mix until the mixture resembles crumbs. Create a well in the center and pour in milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Mix only until all ingredients are combined.
  • Bring the sugar mixture to a vigorous boil, then spoon large dollops of the batter into the syrup. Cover and let simmer on medium heat without peeking for 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the biggest dumpling comes out clean.
