Vintage sour cream drop cookies with a tender texture, inspired by a family heirloom recipe from the 1930s.
Ingredients:
  • 1.3333333730698 cups white sugar
  • 0.25 cup shortening
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1 large lemon, zested
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon baking powder
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare two baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper.
  • Beat sugar, shortening, and butter in a stand mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 1 minute.
  • Blend sour cream and fresh lemon zest on low speed until fully incorporated. Add eggs one by one, mixing on medium-low until yolks are fully blended, and remember to scrape down the bowl after each addition. Lastly, add flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder simultaneously, mixing just until combined.
  • Spoon heaping tablespoons of the mixture onto the baking sheets, ensuring they are spaced about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes until the tops are puffy and spring back when lightly touched with a finger. Aim for a light golden color with occasional spots of pale golden brown.
