Create a perfectly flaky pie crust texture by combining butter and shortening using a food processor for effortless preparation.
Ingredients:
  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup cold shortening, cut into chunks
  • 0.75 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 6 tablespoons ice water, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a food processor and pulse until mixed.
  • Distribute shortening chunks evenly over the flour mixture. Pulse in the food processor until the mixture resembles coarse sand, using 3 to 5 one-second pulses.
  • Sprinkle butter pieces evenly over the flour mixture. Pulse in the food processor until the butter is the size of small peas, using 10 to 15 one-second pulses.
  • Drizzle water over the butter-flour mixture and pulse until the dough just begins to come together, adding water 1 tablespoon at a time if needed. Transfer the dough to a bowl and gently shape it into a cohesive yet slightly crumbly ball using your hands. Divide the dough into two portions and wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. Flatten each portion into a disk using a rolling pin. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before using.
