Whip up a wild animal-themed decorating party for kids.
Ingredients:
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Yellow Cake Mix or 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Devil's Food Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
  • 1 1/4 cups from 1 tub (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Chocolate Frosting
  • Black food color
  • 2 1/2 cups from 2 tubs (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Vanilla Frosting
  • Yellow and red food color
  • 1 1/2 cups caramel popcorn
  • 12 brown miniature candy-coated chocolate baking bits
  • 12 pretzel sticks
  • 12 pieces Cheerios™ cereal (any flavor)
  • 12 orange chewy fruit-flavored gumdrops (not sugar coated), cut in half crosswise, top halves discarded
  • 6 miniature marshmallows, cut in half crosswise, pieces flattened
  • 12 small round chocolate-covered creamy mints
  • 6 round vanilla wafer cookies
  • 24 brown miniature candy-coated chocolate baking bits
  • 6 black chewy licorice-flavored gumdrops (not sugar coated), cut in half vertically
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (or 325°F for dark or nonstick pans) and line 24 regular-size muffin cups with paper baking cups. Follow the instructions on the cake mix box to prepare the batter for 24 cupcakes. Bake as directed. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack. Once completely cooled (about 30 minutes), decorate the cupcakes to create 6 lions, 6 tigers, 6 monkeys, and 6 zebras.
  • Combine 1/2 cup of chocolate frosting with black food color in a small bowl to create black frosting. Transfer the black frosting into a resealable plastic freezer bag and snip a small tip from one corner of the bag. Proceed with decorating lions, tigers, monkeys, and zebras as per steps 3 through 7, using the black frosting.
  • In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup vanilla frosting with yellow and red food colors until you achieve a vibrant orange color. In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of the orange frosting with 3 tablespoons of white vanilla frosting to create a lighter orange shade for the muzzles. Use this mixture to pipe a small circle on top of each cupcake as the muzzle. Frost the rest of the cupcakes with the darker orange frosting.
  • Create a captivating lion cupcake by encircling the edges with caramel corn for a majestic mane. Use brown baking bits for the eyes, break pretzel sticks into 1/2-inch pieces for whiskers, and place cereal pieces as ears. Finish with a touch of black frosting to carefully pipe on the mouth and nose.
  • Decorate the tiger cupcake by piping on stripes, nose, and mouth with black frosting. Add brown baking bits for eyes and gumdrop halves for ears.
  • For the monkey cupcakes: Frost 6 cupcakes with chocolate frosting. In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of chocolate frosting and 2 tablespoons of vanilla frosting to create a light brown frosting. Using the light brown frosting, create a circle starting from the middle and extending to the edge for the muzzle on each cupcake; pipe a small tuft of hair on the opposite edge. Attach a brown baking bit to a marshmallow half with frosting to make each eye; place on the cupcakes. Use black frosting to pipe on the nose and mouth. Complete the monkey look by adding mints for ears.
  • Prepare the zebras: Make a small horizontal slit on the top of each of the 6 cupcakes near the edge of the paper cup. Insert the edge of a vanilla wafer cookie into each slit to create an elongated face, adding a small amount of vanilla frosting to the cookie before inserting it to help it stick. Frost the cupcakes with vanilla frosting. Frost the cookies with black frosting to create muzzles. Using black frosting, pipe on stripes and a mane. Add brown baking bits for nostrils and eyes, and place black gumdrop halves with the cut sides down for ears.
