Family-favorite buttermilk-spice cake with a perfect balance of sweetness and bold spices.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 2.5 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 0.125 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
Instructions:
  • Heat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Combine flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice in a bowl and whisk until fully blended.
  • Combine butter, brown sugar, and white sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer until fluffy. Mix in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract. Stir in half of the flour mixture until just combined. Pour in buttermilk, mix until just combined, then add remaining flour mixture and mix until just combined. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the center of the cake springs back lightly when touched. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
  • In a large bowl, beat smooth butter. Combine with cream cheese until fully mixed. Gradually add confectioners' sugar, followed by vanilla and salt. Pour in heavy cream and beat for 2 minutes until smooth. Frost cake as desired once cooled.
