Classic Italian bread with simple, essential ingredients - flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and water - for a delicious loaf to enjoy now or save for later.
Ingredients:
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 3 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 7 cups all-purpose flour, divided, or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • cooking spray
Instructions:
  • Combine sugar and yeast in warm water and allow to proof.
  • Mix in 4 cups of flour until a smooth consistency is achieved. Cover and allow to rest for 15 minutes.
  • Add salt to the mixture and gradually incorporate the remaining flour until a thick dough forms. Knead the dough until it is soft and smooth. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it, and allow it to rise until doubled in size.
  • After doubling in size, gently deflate the dough and divide it into three equal portions. Return the portions to the bowl, cover them, and allow them to rise again.
  • After doubling in size, deflate the dough and shape it into three chubby "footballs." Grease sturdy cookie sheets and dust with cornmeal. Transfer the bread onto the sheets, then cover with a towel and allow it to rise.
  • Preheat the oven to a piping hot 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • Gently spray loaves with water and bake in the preheated oven until they turn golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom, about 25 to 30 minutes. Remember to mist the loaves with water and rotate them periodically during baking for best results.
