Grandma's cinnamon apple dumplings: Flaky biscuit dough envelops crisp apples, drizzled with rich butter sauce.
Ingredients:
  • nonstick baking spray
  • 0.75 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 large Granny Smith apple - peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1 (10 ounce) can refrigerated flaky biscuit dough
  • 0.5 stick unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 6 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously coat a square baking pan with nonstick spray.
  • In a bowl, combine melted butter with sugar, flour, and cinnamon to create the dumpling mixture. Coat apples in the mixture, then add 2 tablespoons of warm water and mix well.
  • Carefully expand each biscuit until it can hold 1 tablespoon of apple mixture, making sure not to overstretch and tear the dough.
  • Place a generous tablespoon of apple mixture in the center of each biscuit. Carefully fold the dough around the filling to create a sealed ball shape for each dumpling.
  • Place the dumplings on the cutting board with the sealed side facing down. Make a small slit on the top of each dumpling using a sharp knife to allow steam to escape during cooking.
  • Bake in the oven until perfectly golden brown, for 15-25 minutes.
  • As the dumplings bake, melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Gradually whisk in flour until smooth. Stir in water until well combined. Remove from heat and whisk in sugar and vanilla extract.
  • Take the dumplings out of the oven, drizzle sauce over the top, and bake for an additional 5 to 6 minutes, until the edges of the dumplings turn golden brown and pull away from the pan.
