Whip up your own pizza dough and sauce using simple ingredients. This recipe yields two 12-inch cheese pizzas; customize with your favorite toppings!
Ingredients:
  • 1 (.25 ounce) envelope active dry yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup chopped onion
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.25 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.25 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.125 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 (12 ounce) package shredded mozzarella cheese, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Prepare all ingredients.
  • Prepare the dough by mixing yeast in lukewarm water in a small bowl until creamy, approximately 10 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, shortening, and salt. Then, pour in the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, approximately 8 minutes.
  • Oil a large bowl, then place the dough in and coat it with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, around 45 minutes.
  • Prepare the sauce by heating oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Sauté the onion until tender, for approximately 5 minutes.
  • Combine tomato paste, water, salt, sugar, oregano, garlic powder, basil, marjoram, cumin, chili powder, red pepper flakes, and black pepper in a pot and let simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Divide dough in half, then roll each half into a 12-inch circle. Place the dough on two 12-inch pizza pans and top with sauce and mozzarella cheese.
  • Bake until crusts turn a lovely golden brown in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes.
