Satisfying ham and bean soup with tender Great Northern beans and savory ham hocks, perfect for chilly days.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 cups dried Great Northern beans
  • 4 meaty ham hocks
  • 5 cups water
  • 1.5 cups sliced celery
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 large carrot, chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme, or more to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
Instructions:
  • Soak Great Northern beans in a large container filled with cool water. Allow them to sit overnight for 8 hours. Drain the beans and transfer them to a large stockpot.
  • Combine ham hocks, water, celery, onion, carrot, garlic, thyme, black pepper, and bay leaf with beans in a stockpot and bring to a boil. Simmer over medium-low heat until ham is tender and falls off the bones, around 2 hours.
  • Remove the flavorful ham hocks from the soup, then separate the tender meat from the bones, making sure to discard any unwanted fat and bones. Add the succulent meat back into the pot and let it simmer until the beans have reached the perfect level of softness.
