Try our savory oven-baked pasta al forno for a delightful and chewy take on traditional meat sauce pasta.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, or as needed
  • 2 red onions, finely chopped
  • 0.5 pound ground beef, or more to taste
  • 0.5 pound bacon, chopped
  • 0.25 cup white wine, or as needed
  • 2 (26 ounce) packages chopped tomatoes (such as Pomi®)
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar, or more to taste
  • salt to taste
  • 1 (16 ounce) package rotini pasta (such as Barilla®)
  • 4 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese, or more to taste
  • 0.33333334326744 pound chopped provolone cheese
  • 0.33333334326744 pound chopped mozzarella cheese
Instructions:
  • In a skillet, gently cook onions in olive oil until soft and translucent without browning them, about 5 minutes. Add ground beef and bacon, then sauté over medium-high heat until meat is browned and crumbly, stirring occasionally for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Pour wine into the skillet and simmer until it evaporates, about 1-3 minutes. Stir in chopped tomatoes and tomato paste. Fill the tomato paste can with water and add it to the skillet. Simmer the sauce uncovered until oil no longer appears on the surface, for approximately 30 minutes. Add sugar and salt, then cook and stir until dissolved, around 3 minutes more.
  • While waiting, bring a generous pot of salted water to a boil. Boil rotini pasta for 5 minutes, drain, rinse with cold water, then return to the pot with a splash of olive oil to prevent sticking.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease two 9x13-inch baking dishes.
  • Pour a generous amount of sauce and sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of Parmesan cheese into the pot with the cooked pasta.
  • Begin by delicately spooning a delicate layer of pasta into each meticulously prepared baking dish. Gracefully crown each layer with a delicate combination of provolone and mozzarella cheeses, followed by a generous helping of sauce. Repeat this artful layering process with the remaining pasta, cheeses, and sauce, culminating in a final touch of Parmesan cheese for a delectable finish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes until bubbly and melted.
