Delicious Greek pasta and mince bake topped with golden cheese, great for cozy winter dinners.
Ingredients:
  • 18.20 gm olive oil
  • 1 brown onion, halved, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1kg lamb mince
  • 1 x 800g can diced tomatoes
  • 44.40 gm tomato paste
  • 2.50 gm ground cinnamon
  • 2 dried bay leaves
  • 82.50 ml coarsely chopped fresh continental parsley
  • 300g dried macaroni pasta
  • 40.00 ml dried (packaged) breadcrumbs
  • 50g butter
  • 40g (1/4 cup) plain flour
  • 625ml (2 1/2 cups) milk
  • 70g (1 cup) coarsely grated kefalotyri cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C. In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, heat the oil. Sauté the onion and garlic until softened, about 3 minutes. Brown the mince for about 5 minutes. Stir in the tomato, tomato paste, cinnamon, and bay leaves. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the parsley.
  • To prepare the sauce, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it foams. Add flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until it bubbles. Slowly pour in the milk, stirring to combine. Cook and stir for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens, then mix in half of the kefalotyri cheese.
  • Cook the pasta in a saucepan of salted boiling water until al dente following packet instructions. Drain and divide among six 625ml (2 1/2-cup) capacity ovenproof dishes. Top with mince mixture and pour over cheese sauce. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the top. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Serve hot.
