Indulge in a Filipino treat - sweet steamed cake topped with cheese, perfect with fruit, chocolate, or jam for dessert or a snack.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 2.25 cups Edam cheese, shredded
Instructions:
  • Prepare the small cake molds or ramekins by greasing them, ensuring they will fit in a steamer basket.
  • Combine flour, sugar, and baking powder in one bowl. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, evaporated milk, and water. Gently fold the dry mixture into the eggs until well combined. Fill molds 2/3 full with batter and sprinkle with shredded cheese before baking.
  • Fill a wok or a saucepan with water, ensuring it's a few inches deep. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Put the molds in a steamer basket, place it over the boiling water, and cover.
  • Steam the putos for approximately 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Then, cool them on a wire rack and serve either warm or at room temperature.
