Colombian sweet bread filled with guava paste - a must-try treat!
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2.5 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 0.5 cup guava paste, or to taste
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 0.5 cup coarse granulated sugar, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Warm the milk in the microwave or on the stovetop until it reaches 110 degrees F (43 degrees C).
  • Combine warm milk, egg, butter, flour, white sugar, icing sugar, salt, and yeast in a bread machine in the order given. Select the Dough cycle and allow it to run for approximately 90 minutes. Remove the dough from the machine once the cycle is complete.
  • Divide the dough into 4 or 5 equal parts based on desired roscones size. Roll each piece into a 1/2-inch-wide strip. Flatten the strips and evenly fill them with guava paste.
  • Roll the dough to center the filling, ensuring it's not visible from the outside. Seal both ends together to form a circle with a hole in the middle, resembling a doughnut. Transfer to an oiled baking pan, allowing room for expansion. Use a sharp, non-serrated knife to make shallow slits on the top to reveal a bit of the filling.
  • Allow the roscones to rest and rise until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour, while covered.
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Coat each roscone with a luxurious egg wash and generously sprinkle with coarse sugar for an irresistible sweet crunch.
  • Place in the oven that has been preheated and bake until golden brown, usually takes 12 to 15 minutes. Allow to cool on a wire rack before serving.
