Create a mouthwatering Smashburger with a delicious thin beef patty, crispy caramelized crust, melty cheese, and your favorite toppings on the stovetop.
Ingredients:
  • For the copycat smash sauce
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons pickle juice
  • 1 tablespoon diced pickle
  • For the burger seasoning mix
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • For the smashburger
  • 1 pound 80/20 ground chuck
  • 4 potato hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • For the toppings
  • 1/2 head green leaf lettuce, washed and dried
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced
  • 6 slices American cheese
Instructions:
  • Prepare the copycat smash sauce by mixing mayonnaise, mustard, pickle juice, and diced pickles in a small bowl. Keep it aside for burger assembly.
  • Create a flavorful burger seasoning blend by mixing together kosher salt, black pepper, and seasoned salt in a small bowl.
  • Shape the ground beef into four equal-sized balls and gently season each with a hint of 1/8 teaspoon burger seasoning mix, allowing flavor to develop while cooking. Feel free to adjust seasoning as needed during cooking.
  • Prepare the smashburgers: Line a heavy skillet (such as cast iron) with foil to use for smashing the burgers. Opt for a smaller size, like an 8-inch cast iron skillet. Turn on the stove's fan and open a window for ventilation. In a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat, melt one tablespoon of butter. Add the beef balls and use the foil-wrapped skillet or a spatula to smash them into flat disks, applying pressure for 10 seconds per burger. Repeat for each burger until they are all smashed.
  • Sprinkle an extra 1/8 teaspoon of burger seasoning mix over the smashburgers. Let them cook for approximately 90 seconds until the juices begin to bubble. Then, flip the burgers using a sturdy metal spatula, ensuring to scrape up any caramelized bits.
  • Place 1 1/2 slices of cheese on each burger after flipping. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until desired doneness, typically medium. No need to check the temperature, the burger is ready when nicely caramelized. Cook an extra 30 seconds for well-done burgers, if preferred.
  • Toast the burger buns: While burgers cook, toast the buns by adding remaining 1 tablespoon of butter to a large skillet over medium heat. Place buns cut side down and toast for 30 seconds until golden. Repeat until all buns are toasted. If using a griddle, you can toast the buns with the burgers.
  • Assemble the smashburgers by starting with a dollop of sauce, around 1 tablespoon, on the bottom bun. Layer on lettuce followed by a smashburger, then top with sliced red onion and tomato. Repeat for each smashburger. Serve right away with fries and a refreshing drink.
