Slow cooker goetta: Steel-cut oats, ground beef, pork sausage; chill, slice, fry like bacon.
Ingredients:
  • 3 quarts water
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 5 cups steel cut oats
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 2 pounds ground pork sausage
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 0.25 cup cooking oil
Instructions:
  • In a slow cooker set to High, heat water, salt, and pepper until boiling. Add steel cut oats, stir well, cover, and cook for 90 minutes.
  • Combine beef, pork, and onions in a large bowl. Stir in the oat mixture and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Pour the mixture into a medium baking pan and let it cool until semi-solid. Then, flip it onto wax paper and refrigerate for 1 hour, or until firm.
  • In a large, heavy skillet over medium high heat, heat oil. Slice the refrigerated mixture thinly and cook the slices individually in the hot oil until they are evenly browned.
