Easy and delicious German sunken apple cake, moist and flavorful.
Ingredients:
  • 9 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 10 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 medium apples, or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar for dusting, or as needed
Instructions:
  • In a spacious bowl, use an electric mixer to whip the butter until creamy. Gradually incorporate the sugar until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition.
  • Combine 1 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons of flour and baking powder in a separate bowl, then fold it into the batter until smooth.
  • Peel and quarter the apples, then fan out each quarter without cutting all the way through, starting from the outside towards the core.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously butter a springform pan.
  • Spread the batter evenly in the prepared springform pan. Arrange apple quarters in a circular pattern on top of the batter with the rounded side facing up, gently pressing them in.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes until the cake turns a beautiful golden brown.
  • After baking, let the cake cool before sprinkling it with confectioners' sugar.
