Traditional Lithuanian honey liqueur recipe, passed down through generations with a touch of mystery.
Ingredients:
1lemon
1orange
1poundhoney
3.5 cups bottled water
3cups white sugar
3tablespoons caraway seeds
25whole cloves
1tablespoonvanilla extract
4teaspoons ground cinnamon
2teaspoons ground nutmeg
2pints 190 proof grain alcohol
Instructions:
Peel the orange and lemon in large, circular strips. Place the peels in a warm, dry area to air dry for 24 hours.
Combine honey, 1 cup water, sugar, caraway seeds, cloves, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ground nutmeg in a large pot. Bring to a rolling boil, then simmer on low heat for 45 minutes. Add dried orange and lemon peels, and continue to simmer for an additional 15 minutes.
Once off heat, dispose of fruit peels. Mix grain alcohol and remaining 2 1/2 cups water into honey mixture. Transfer to a glass container, seal tightly, and place in a cool, dark spot. Every few days, gently swirl the container for 1 week.
Pass the mixture through a double-layered cheesecloth to filter out any sediment. Transfer the liqueur into bottles or decanters and seal them.
