Swiss Sunday Zopf bread: Easy and beautiful homemade loaf from Switzerland.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1.3329999446869 cups warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3.5 cups bread flour
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, lightly warm the milk and dissolve the yeast. Let it sit until creamy for approximately 10 minutes. Add the egg yolk and butter, followed by 2 cups of bread flour; mix thoroughly. Gradually add the rest of the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, vigorously stirring after each addition. Once the dough comes together, transfer it to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic for about 8 minutes.
  • Take the dough and divide it into 3 equal parts. Roll each part into a 14-inch long cylinder. Braid the cylinders together and place them on a lightly greased baking sheet. Cover with a damp cloth and let the braid rise until it doubles in size, around 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) while you prepare the next steps.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the egg white and water until frothy. Brush the risen loaf with the egg wash and bake in a preheated oven until golden, 20 to 25 minutes.
