Childhood favorite cookies; simple and sweet. Dust with powdered sugar, granulated sugar, or cinnamon for extra flavor. Yum!
Ingredients:
  • 2 quarts canola oil for deep frying
  • 0.75 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 0.75 cup applesauce
  • 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground mace
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk
  • 0.25 cup confectioners' sugar for dusting
Instructions:
  • Preheat oil in deep-fryer until it reaches 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Combine white sugar, butter, eggs, and applesauce in a large bowl, beating until smooth. In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, mace, and cinnamon. Gradually combine the flour mixture with the egg mixture and buttermilk until a stiff dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface, roll it into a 3/4 to 1 inch thick sheet, ensuring even thickness, and then cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter.
  • Gently add doughnuts to hot oil, turning once they float. Fry until golden on both sides, then drain on paper towels and dust with confectioners' sugar before serving hot.
