Experience the bold flavors of the Philippines with these irresistible homemade baked siopao filled with flavorful seasoned pork.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 0.25 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 cup water
Instructions:
  • Prepare the dough: Warm the milk in the microwave until it's just lukewarm, about 15-30 seconds. Transfer the milk to a large bowl and combine it with eggs, oil, and water, mixing until well combined.
  • Combine flour, yeast, and salt in a medium bowl. Stir in milk mixture until well combined. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.
  • Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding more flour if needed. Shape into a smooth ball by tucking ends under. Transfer to a clean bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until doubled in size.
  • Prepare the flavorful filling by combining pork with soy sauce, sugar, oyster sauce, cornstarch, and pepper in a bowl. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Sauté onion, garlic, and star anise in the hot oil for 2 minutes. Add the ground pork mixture and cook until browned and crumbly, about 4 to 5 minutes. Pour in water and simmer on low heat, scraping the bottom of the pan occasionally until the mixture is glazed but not soupy, approximately 10 minutes. Transfer the filling to a bowl and refrigerate until the dough is ready.
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 100 degrees F (37 degrees C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Divide dough into golf ball-sized pieces, approximately 2 inches in diameter, and place on the baking pan with some space in between. Flatten each ball to a 1/4-inch thickness or larger than your palm. Spoon 1 tablespoon of filling into the center of each dough round. Gather the edges at the top, twist, and seal them securely. Return the buns to the baking sheet.
  • Once the oven reaches temperature, switch it off. Place the buns on the baking sheet in the warm oven and let them rest until doubled in size, which should take approximately 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) with delicious buns inside. Bake until the bottoms are lightly browned, about 12 to 15 minutes.
