Beef and potato savory pie baked between flaky crusts; perfect for cozy nights.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons milk, or as needed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 0.5 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 pounds beef sirloin, cut into cubes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 2 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 10-inch pie crusts, rolled out to fit a 9x13-inch baking dish
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and position a baking sheet on the lower oven rack.
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt butter with oil until sizzling. Sauté onion until tender, about 10 minutes. Brown beef on all sides for about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook until aromatic, about 1 minute.
  • Combine flour, pepper, and salt with beef; cook until beef is coated, about 2 to 3 minutes. Pour in wine, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Combine beef stock, potatoes, carrots, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce with the beef mixture and bring to a gentle boil. Simmer until vegetables are tender, typically between 30 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Place a pie crust into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Fill the crust with the beef and potato mixture. Add the second pie crust on top, sealing the edges by crimping them together with a fork or your fingers. Brush the top crust with milk.
  • Place the baking dish on a baking sheet in the oven and bake until the crust turns a beautiful golden brown, which should take around 40 to 45 minutes.
