Irresistible Filipino beef steak with flavorful marinade.
Ingredients:
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 0.5 cup soy sauce (such as Kikkoman®)
  • 0.25 cup lime juice
  • 3 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce
  • 1 pound beef steak, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided, or as needed
  • 4 potatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 large onion, cut into rings
  • 0.125 cup water
Instructions:
  • In a bowl, mix soy sauce, lime juice, garlic, sugar, fish sauce, and pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste. Add sliced beef, ensuring it's well coated. Marinate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • In a heated wok or pan, fry the potatoes in 1 tablespoon of oil until the edges are golden brown, about 7 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  • In the same pan, heat the remaining oil over medium-high heat and cook the onions until the edges caramelize, about 7 to 10 minutes. Place them on the same plate for later use.
  • Heat the pan over medium-high heat. Fry the beef in batches in the reserved marinade, adding more vegetable oil if needed, until nicely browned and cooked through, about 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining beef.
  • Deglaze the pan by pouring in the reserved marinade and water, using a wooden spoon to scrape up the browned bits. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Add the beef and some onion to the pan, reserving the rest for garnish. Simmer over low heat until the sauce thickens, about 7 to 10 minutes.
  • Transfer the beef and sauce elegantly onto a serving plate, topping it with the remaining onion for a flavorful finish. Arrange the potatoes on the side for a complete and delicious meal.
