Indulge in decadent black velvet cake with fluffy whipped frosting for a delightful dessert experience.
Ingredients:
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened regular or dark baking cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 bottle (1 oz) black food color
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 containers (12 oz each) cream cheese whipped ready-to-spread frosting
  • Black string licorice, if desired
  • Black jelly beans, if desired
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans) and generously grease and lightly flour 3 (8- or 9-inch) round cake pans.
  • Combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. In a separate large bowl, use an electric mixer on low speed to blend oil, buttermilk, eggs, food color, vinegar, and vanilla. Gradually add the flour mixture and beat on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally. Transfer the batter into pans.
  • Bake for 23 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes, then transfer from pans to cooling racks. Allow to cool completely, approximately 1 hour.
  • Remove any loose crumbs from the cake layers. Start by placing one cake layer rounded side down on a serving plate and spread 1 cup of frosting on top. Add the second cake layer rounded side up and spread another cup of frosting. Place the third cake layer on top. Apply a thin layer of frosting on the sides to seal in the crumbs, then cover the rest of the cake with the remaining frosting. Cut the licorice into pieces and pile it on top of the cake. Lastly, decorate the bottom edge of the cake with jelly beans.
