Indulge in our savory and slightly sweet meaty baked beans.
Ingredients:
  • 400g (2 cups) dried great northern beans
  • 750g ham hocks
  • 1 brown onion, halved, coarsely chopped
  • 750ml (3 cups) water
  • 80g (1/2 cup, lightly packed) brown sugar
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) molasses
  • 6 crusty bread rolls, split, lightly toasted, to serve
  • Coarsely chopped fresh continental parsley, to serve
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, submerge the beans in cold water and let them soak for 8 hours or overnight. After soaking, rinse the beans under cold running water and drain well before using.
  • Preheat the oven to 160°C. Arrange beans, ham hocks, onion, garlic, water, sugar, and molasses in a large baking dish.
  • Bake covered in a preheated oven for 3 hours until beans are tender, then uncover and cook for 30 more minutes until sauce thickens slightly. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • On each plate, layer a bread-roll half with baked beans and parsley. Add the remaining bread-roll halves on top and serve promptly.
