Braided Italian Herb Bread

Herb-infused braided bread bursting with basil, oregano, rosemary, and garlic - a flavorful delight!
Ingredients:
  • 4.5 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.75 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.75 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, mix together 1 1/2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, basil, salt, oregano, garlic powder, and rosemary.
  • In a small microwave-safe bowl, mix milk, water, and butter. Microwave until butter melts (about 30 seconds). Pour over the flour mixture, beat until dough is just moistened. Add egg and beat until smooth. Lastly, stir in the remaining 3 cups of flour to form a soft dough.
  • Place the dough on a floured surface, like a large cutting board or countertop. Knead it for about 4 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover it and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into thirds and shape each piece into a 15-inch rope. Place the ropes on a greased baking sheet, braid them together, pinch the ends to seal, and tuck them under the braid. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 25 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the braid's top with fragrant olive oil and sprinkle with aromatic basil leaves.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool on the baking sheet, or transfer to a wire rack.
