Crispy fried green tomatoes with zesty remoulade sauce - a tangy and irresistible Southern classic.
Ingredients:
  • 4 (1/2 inch) slices green tomato
  • 0.75 cup cornmeal
  • 0.75 cup bread crumbs
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Lay tomato slices on a paper towel-lined rack. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt and allow to sit for 15 minutes to extract excess juices.
  • Combine cornmeal and bread crumbs in a bowl, adding 1/2 teaspoon salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Place flour in a third bowl.
  • Dry tomato slices with paper towels. Dredge each slice in flour, ensuring both sides are coated, then let rest in flour for 30 seconds. Dip each slice into egg mixture, followed by cornmeal mixture, ensuring thorough coating on both sides. Use a fork to spread crumbs on all sides and into tomato crevices. Place tomatoes on a rack and allow coating to set for 10 minutes.
  • Mix sweet pickle relish, mayonnaise, and hot sauce in a small bowl to create the flavorful remoulade sauce.
  • In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, combine vegetable oil and butter until the butter melts and sizzles. Fry tomato slices until they are slightly soft and golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes per side, flipping them with a spatula and fork.
  • Plate the crispy fried green tomatoes and pair them with a flavorful remoulade sauce for serving.
