Try this intriguing apple pie twist - create a buttery cracker filling that mimics the taste of real apples using clever chemistry.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (14.1 ounce) package double-crust pie pastry, thawed
  • 2 cups water
  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 25 buttery round crackers
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 450 degrees F (225 degrees C).
  • Roll out the pastry and line the bottom of a pie pan with it, then set it aside.
  • In a large saucepan, heat water until it boils.
  • Combine sugar and cream of tartar in a small bowl. Pour into boiling water and stir. Add crackers individually and allow to boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
  • Transfer the cracker mixture into the pastry-lined pie pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon, dot with butter, cover with the top pastry, seal edges, and cut steam vents in the top.
  • Bake until crust turns golden brown, for approximately 30 minutes. Consider covering the pastry halfway to avoid burning.
