Create a fun chocolate surprise filled with the kids' favorite candies.
Ingredients:
  • 2 x 340g packets golden buttercake cake mix
  • Chocolate-brown gel food colouring
  • 2 x 170g blocks Kit Kat Classic milk chocolate break
  • 1 red jube
  • 250.00 ml assorted lollies (jelly snakes, jubes, Jaffas, freckles, Mentos, jelly dinosaurs, jelly babies, licorice allsorts)
  • 375g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 675.00 gm icing sugar mixture, sifted
  • 3.30 gm vanilla extract
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 180C/160C fan-forced, then generously grease a 7cm-deep, 22cm-square cake pan, and line the base and sides with baking paper.
  • Follow the instructions on the packet to prepare the cake batter. Pour the batter into the pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it sit in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  • Prepare the Buttercream icing: Beat the butter in a bowl with an electric mixer for 5 minutes until it turns pale. Gradually add the icing sugar mixture in batches, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla and tint with chocolate brown food coloring. Cut the cardboard lid in half using sharp scissors.
  • Place the cake on a flat surface and level the top if needed. Using a serrated knife, carefully cut the cake in half crossways. Put one cake half on a cake board and spread the top with 1/2 cup of icing. Sandwich with the other cake half. Thinly spread the top and sides of the cake with 1 cup of icing. Spread 1/2 cup of icing on the top and sides of the cardboard lid. Place the cake and lid on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until firm.
  • Break the Kit Kat into pieces and use small sharp scissors to trim the red jube into a heart shape.
  • Set aside 1/3 cup of icing. Frost the entire cake with the remaining icing. Adorn the front panel of the toy box with a heart-shaped jube, using the photo as a reference. Line the edges of the toy box with Kit Kat pieces, adjusting as needed. Place two Kit Kat pieces vertically on each back corner of the toy box. Create three rows of Kit Kat pieces on the back of the toy box, starting from the bottom for extra support for the lid. Place 3⁄4 of the lollies and toys on top of the toy box, then carefully position the lid over them. Chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to secure the lid in place.
  • Garnish the toy box with the remaining lollies and toys before serving.
