Irresistible homemade garlic butter breadsticks, superior to Olive Garden's famous version.
Ingredients:
  • For the breadsticks
  • 1 cup warm water2 tablespoons honey2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt3 1/2 cups (425g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, for bowl
  • Nonstick cooking spray, for greasing
  • 4 cups boiling water, for baking
  • For the garlic butter
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted1 tablespoon fresh minced parsley1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions:
  • Activate the yeast: Combine water and honey in a large bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the mixture and allow it to rest for 5 minutes until it dissolves and becomes frothy. Mix in melted butter and salt.
  • Prepare dough: Combine the flour and stir until a rough ball forms. Transfer to a clean surface, knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and shiny. Perform the windowpane test to check gluten formation. Adjust flour as needed. For stand mixer, knead on medium-low for 5-6 minutes until it passes the windowpane test.
  • Grease a large bowl with olive oil and coat the dough by turning it in the bowl. Loosely cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit in a warm place for 1 1/2 hours until it doubles in size. Lightly spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside.
  • Prepare the breadsticks: Deflate the dough with your fist and place it on the counter. Divide into 12 equal pieces, around 57 grams each, for uniformity. Roll each into a 6 to 7-inch smooth breadstick. Place them on the baking sheet, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and let rise for 20 minutes as you preheat the oven.
  • Preheat the oven to 425˚F with racks positioned in the center and bottom third. Boil 4 cups of water. Just before baking, pour the boiling water into an oven-safe 8- or 9-inch pan on the bottom rack to create steam. Bake the breadsticks for 14 minutes, rotating the baking sheet halfway through.
  • While the breadsticks are baking, prepare the garlic butter by mixing together melted butter, parsley, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Brush the freshly baked breadsticks with the garlic butter as soon as they come out of the oven.
  • Serve the breadsticks warm after allowing them to cool slightly. Leftovers can be easily reheated by popping them in a 325˚F oven for a few minutes or microwaving for 15 to 20 seconds. Love the recipe? Leave us a rating below!
