30-minute creamy mushroom sauce made with pantry staples, perfect for topping chicken or pasta.
Ingredients:
  • nonstick cooking spray
  • 1 (8 ounce) package sliced fresh button mushrooms
  • 2 cloves garlic, pressed
  • 1.5 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1.5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups 2% milk
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Preheat a large skillet over medium heat, preferably a regular skillet. Lightly coat the skillet with cooking spray, then add the mushrooms. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms start releasing their juices. Mix in the garlic and cook until the mushrooms release more juice and the garlic browns slightly. Transfer the flavorful mushroom-garlic mixture to a small bowl and set aside.
  • Clean the skillet by gently wiping it with a paper towel to eliminate any charred garlic residues. In the same skillet, heat and melt butter over medium-low heat until it bubbles and foams. Stir in flour and whisk persistently to create a roux. Once the roux has a subtle dark hue, gradually pour in milk, a few tablespoons at a time, whisking until smooth after each addition.
  • Return the flavorful mushroom-garlic mixture to the skillet, allowing it to gently simmer until it thickens to your liking. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
